Have just been researching the so called ‘back story’ to the Blair Witch Project in anticipation of the showing on Film4 tonight; I googled Elly Kedward and stumbled across the website for a prequel called ‘The Trial of Elly Kedward.” I ask at what point will the barrage of sub standard movie prequels will end. It’s the old piece of Hollywood Trivia that no movie sequel has ever won an Oscar. The conventions of a sequel mean that it is set at some point following the original movie, therfore a prequel must be set before the original movie. Surely the idea of a prequel to the Blair Witch legend, can only detract from the original films premise. In that it was supposed to look like it was an amatuer film of ACTUAL events. The website set up by the producers of Blair Witch had the look of an actual website, making the film more frighteningly realistic. Why mess with a winning formula? The idea of a film depicting the preceding contributing factors could perhaps ruin the second most profitable movie ever made.
